What is the Levoit H133 Air Purifier Best For?

Asthma and allergies: the Levoit H133 is excellent for relieving asthma and allergy symptoms thanks to the true-HEPA filtration. What’s more, it is completely ozone-free, an excellent feature for asthmatics who are triggered by ozone emissions from ionizers. Plus, the Auto mode senses when extra allergens are present in the air, and increases the fan speed to get rid of them more quickly. Check out our review of the best air purifiers for allergies (opens in a new tab).

Bedrooms: this is an excellent bedroom air purifier because the LED lights can be turned off, and “sleep” mode uses the quietest fan speed. Even light sleepers can rest undisturbed while the air purifier keeps their environment clear of allergens.

Household and pet odors: the activated carbon filter along with the Auto mode ensures pet-related and household odors are heavily reduced for a fresh environment. Many customer reviews praise the H133 for reducing cat litter, cigarette smoke, and cooking odors effectively.

Filtration System

The H133 features a standard 3-stage filtration system with nothing fancy or out of the ordinary. However, it is a thorough and effective system with a true-HEPA filter (catches 99.97% of particles as small as 0.3 microns), pre-filter, and activated carbon filter. The filters are cylindrical and sit neatly inside the casing, with the air intake directly outside toward the bottom of the unit (the air outlet is at the top of the unit).

Pre-filter: catches the larger particles such as dust and pet hair so the true-HEPA filter can remain cleaner and more effective for longer

True-HEPA filter: catches the smaller particles such as mold spores, dander, and pollen

Activated carbon filter: neutralizes pet, cooking, and smoke smells

Does the Levoit H133 have an Ionizer?

No, the LV-H133 does not have an ionizer or a UV-C light, making it 100% ozone-free. This is excellent for asthmatics and people who have small pets at home who may be seriously harmed by ozone in their environment.

Style, Operation, Modes, & Features

The LV-H133 is a cylindrical unit with a control panel situated at the top, with clearly-marked symbols and indicator lights. The LED ring surrounding the controls is an air quality indicator light that changes color according to how contaminated the air is at the time. It’s an easy unit to operate, with simple one-touch buttons.

Air Quality Indicator and Auto Mode: Auto mode senses the level of contamination in the air and changes the fan speed (low, medium, or high) accordingly. You can also opt to change the fan speeds manually instead.

Timer: program the unit to run for anywhere between 1 and 12 hours before switching off automatically to save power

Sleep Mode: uses the lowest fan speed to reduce noise at night

Dimmer light: this is one of the best user features, as it allows you to turn off the LED lights on the display panel so your bedroom isn’t flooded with sleep-disturbing light

Maintenance & Filter Requirements

The LV-H133 doesn’t come with many out-of-the-ordinary maintenance requirements, but it does require that you clean the dust sensor. This is easy and involves no more than a quick wipe with a damp cotton bud.

How often do the filters need to be changed?

The filter is one single unit comprising of the three stages, which makes things easier (and cheaper) when it comes to replacing it. The filter should be replaced every 6-8 months but this may vary depending on how contaminated the air is. If you notice that the unit isn’t clearing odors as efficiently as it usually does, the operation is louder, or the filter looks very dirty and clogged up, it’s time to switch it out for a fresh filter.

Can the filters be cleaned or washed?

You can’t wash the filter, but you can give the exterior (the pre-filter) a gentle clean with your vacuum cleaner brush attachment. This will help to lengthen the filter’s lifespan by getting rid of large dust and pet hair clumps.

Where can I get replacement filters for the H133 and how much are they?

You can find filter replacement packs for the lowest price on Amazon here.

Noise and Light

Levoit has done well to create a discreet air purifier, with a low noise and light profile to please even the most sensitive of users. The overall noise level is less than 54 decibels, which is equivalent to moderate rainfall, and even quieter when on the lowest fan speed during Sleep mode. The LED lights on the control panel can be switched off with a simple press of a button, great for people who need total darkness at night.

H133 Air Purifier vs. LV-PUR131 & LV-H132

Levoit LV-PUR131

The LV-PUR131 is a rectangular-shaped unit that caters to rooms up to 360 square feet compared to the H133’s 538 square foot rating. It has the same 3-stage filtration unit, sleep mode, auto mode, LED off function, air quality indicator, and timer.

The filter replacement requirements are the same (every 6 months, approximately), but the LV-PURE131 filters are ever so slightly cheaper. Note that you can also opt for a WiFi-enabled LV-PUR131 option if you like to control the unit from afar.

The LV-PUR131 is better suited to smaller rooms and slightly smaller budgets (only by a marginal price difference).

Levoit LV-H132

The LV-H132 is similar in shape (cylindrical) and overall design, with the control panel at the top of the unit. However, it caters to a much smaller room size of 129 square feet (about four times smaller than the H133’s max. space) and boasts a far smaller price tag as a result.

However, this is a much simpler model in terms of controls, as it doesn’t have an auto mode, sleep mode, or timer as the H133 has. It has 3 fan speeds, a filter change indicator light, and a nightlight on/off button to control the blue feature light. The filtration system is the same as the H133 (pre, true-HEPA and carbon filters), and it has the same filter change requirements (6-8 months).

The LV-H132 is best suited to small rooms, smaller budgets, and those with simple needs when it comes to features.
