How to Replace an Air Purifier Filter
Different air purifiers use air filters of varying shapes. Most of them use rectangular air filtration kits, but Honeywell also makes circular kits for its round-shaped air purifiers. The number of actual air filters also varies between air purifiers, although most of them have an activated carbon filter and a HEPA filter as the main air cleaning screens.
Some units may have a reusable and washable mesh screen that prolongs the main filters’ lives by capturing pet fur, hairs, and other sizable air contaminants.
Worth pointing out, in some air purifiers, the filter kit loads from the front. In others, the filter compartment is at the back. The arrangement of the filtration screens also differs between air purifiers. In some, the air passes through the carbon filter first before going through the HEPA filter. Others use a reverse configuration. When it’s available, the washable mesh screen always comes first. The information on the location and configuration of your specific air purifier should be in the manual.
As can be seen, replacing an air purifier may vary slightly between different air purifiers. However, almost all air purifiers are designed to allow breezy filter replacements. The process often takes around 5 minutes, and it’s unlikely that you’ll need any tool.
Step-by-step process of replacing an air purifier filter
Step 1: Switch off the air purifier and unplug the cable from the socket
Step 2: Take off the lid covering the filter kit compartment. In most air purifiers, the cover should pop right off without using any tool.
Step 3: Remove the mesh screen (if available), followed by the main air filtration kit.
Step 4: Clean the mesh screen if there’s one and let it dry. This is a good time to inspect and clean the empty filter kit compartment of any debris, hairs, and dirt. You may also take a few minutes to wipe down the entire air purifier, including the lid. Ensure that the air filter compartment is dry before proceeding to the next step. Always use a dry cloth to wipe down the air purifier and the filter compartment.
Step 5: Remove the new air filtration kit from its plastic wrappings and slide it in the compartment. Be sure to adhere to the recommended arrangement of the filters for maximum effectiveness. If the HEPA filter came out last when disassembling, you should place the new one first, followed by the carbon filter and the mesh screen.
Step 6: Replace the air filter compartment cover and plug the device in the wall outlet.
The air filtration kit is the most critical component in an air purification system. To keep the air purifier at its best performance, keep a close eye on the air filter kit condition and replace it on an as-needed basis or according to the manufacturer’s recommendations. Most importantly, we recommend going with the manufacturer’s recommended air purifier replacement filters. This way, you’re assured that the kit will fit your device and deliver the expected results.
